Lake Como, near the northern Italian border, has a little bit to offer everyone. This popular lake has long been a favorite for travelers and those who want to live in the fresh mountain air. Today there are, of course, the famous stars such as George Clooney and Sting who have homes here, and there are plenty of palatial homes and mansions for those who want to emulate these big names. But there are also smaller, affordable properties for those who want a nice second home or retirement villa. These affordable properties are available off plan, recently built and older houses. For those who want a home in the mountains, this is an ideal place and has something for every budget.

The lake, the third largest in Italy and one of the deepest in Europe, is in the shape of the letter Y, tucked into the mountains. The northern branch begins at the town of Colico, while the towns of Como and Lecco sit at the ends of the southwestern and southeastern branches. The small towns of Bellagio, Menaggio and Varenna are situated at the intersection of the three branches of the lake, roughly in the middle on each side. There is a triangular boat service that operates between them. The lake sits in the beginning of the Alps, with sharply rising granite hills and small mountains on all sides.

There are a large number of properties available around the lake for sale or lease. For those who want to buy an existing home, there are many options, from modern, fully outfitted flats to older homes and villas that might need some work to make more comfortable. Many of the smaller apartments or flats can begin at less than £100,000, so it is quite affordable. From there, the sky is the limit.

The western shore has the most towns and, thus, the most properties available. The eastern shore is a bit more private, but there are some small new developments going up along this side of the lake for those who want off plan, private property. Varenna, on the eastern shore near the middle of the lake, has several new off plan developments that are small and tasteful, yet quite nice. Just up the shoreline in Bellano, there are also some more new properties, with 2 bedroom apartments starting at just over £265,000.

On the other side of the lake, you can find many different options to fit your budget and needs. In Mennagio, there are a number of luxury hillside villas under construction that are for sale just under €600,000. There are other places here and nearby for those with more limited budgets, including a brand new finished apartment for just over £80,000.

With plenty of places that span the range from small to large, quaint to elegant and inexpensive to lavish, Lake Como is an ideal place for those who want a place in the mountains and lakes of northern Italy.
